A spring drum apparatus has a cable drum housing 17, a cable drum 37 arranged to enclose spring devices 44, each such device including a spring container 48 rotatable on the shaft 29 and a spring 47 affixed to both shaft and container. As shown, each spring 47 connecting shaft 29 and its respective container 48 is wound up by worm and worm gear so that its cam 51 presses against its respective spring- influenced plunger 66 to cause arm 62 to be withdrawn inside cable drum 37. The latter then acts as a normal spring drum until a spring breaks, at which point the plungers 66 force out arm 62 through slot 63 formed in drum 37 to engage lugs 65 formed on the stationary housing 17 and support the load on the cable.
