Abstract
824,045. Winch drum layering safety devices. ANGLO AMERICAN CORPORATION OF SOUTH AFRICA Ltd. June 3, 1957 [Aug. 24, 1956], No. 17606/57. Class 78 (5). A safety device for ensuring even layering of cable on to and off a winch drum 10, has a contact member 14 which is displaceable in successive steps, as the layers are formed, by the action of solenoid 50 operating upon the plunger 18 of said member so that no layer normally touches the member 14. If, however, false layering occurs, then the cable touches contact member 14 and pivots it about 20 to close contacts 74, 76 and thus trip the winch motor. Solenoid 50 has three coils 30, 31, 32 which correspond with three layers of cable and are successively energized to cause contact member 14 to move rightwards by successive steps, the coils being operated by a cam disc driven from the winch drun. A second camdisc operates the coils when the winch drum rotates in the paying-out direction. Latch 58 ensures the retention of pivot 20 in the positions established by the coils.
