Abstract

The machine with a rotary component, particularly an electric motor, has a single disc or multiple ones fixed to the component, and a brake plate prevented from rotating and spring-loaded in the axial direction against the disc so as to operate automatically. A solenoid or other suitable device overcomes the spring and holds the plate free. A retractable locking device (20) holds the plate (13) clear of the disc (11), bearing against a face on the former. The locking device is normally held clear of the plate by a spring, so as to allow the automatic brake to operate freely. An actuating mechanism (24) extends the device into the operative position, in which it is retained by the pressure of the brake plate face against it.
