Abstract
509,227. Centrifugal machines. PATENTVERWERTUNGS-GES. HERMES. Nov. 29, 1938, No. 34796. Convention date, Nov. 29, 1937. [Class 23] A safety device for centrifuges and the like, whereby the drive is switched off and the brakes are applied before the cover is opened, has its actuating rod or like part held by a part of the cover locking-device against the action of a spring, in the position in which the motor is switched-on and the brake is released. In the form shown, the centrifuge bowl 3 is enclosed by a casing 1 standing on resilient feet 2. The bowl is driven by an electric motor 5 and a brake disc 9 at the lower end of the bowl shaft 4 rotates between two jaws 10, 11 which can be moved to braking position on the disc by means of a Bowden cable 12 secured to the fixed plate 13. The spring 14 presses on the pivoted lever 16 and maintains tension on the inner wire 18 of the Bowden cable which tends to apply the brake. The bowl and motor assembly is supported on a partition in the casing by means of the spring 7. The end of the lever 16 is mounted with a clearance between two nuts 23, 24 on the vertically sliding rod 19, and the lever 25 of the motor switch 8 is similarly mounted between the rings 26, 27. The upper end of the rod 19 terminates in a hook 33, and a toggle device 32 is arranged between the hook and the bearing 20. The cover 28 swings on the hinge 30 and has a rim covered with rubber 29 ; it is held closed by a locking lever 31 attached to the cover and locked by the toggle. When the cover is closed, the locking of the toggle raises the rod 19 and operates the levers 25, 16 to close the motor switch 8 and to release the brake jaws 10, 11. When the toggle is released for the purpose of raising the cover, the rod 19 drops under the action of the spring 14 and gravity to open the switch 8 and to put on the brake.
