848,909. Drying clothing &c. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 30, 1956 [Nov. 26, 1955; Jan. 21, 1956; Oct. 2, 1956], Nos. 2096/56, 30065/56 and 36610/56. Divided out of 848,908. Class 34(2) A centrifugal clothes &c. drying machine has means for ensuring that the drum driving means and the braking means are not effective concurrently and that the lid cannot be opened without operating the brake. As shown, two brake blocks 25, bearing at diametrically spaced points on the underside of the drum pulley 19, are carried in a U-shaped frame 27, Fig. 2, on a lever 29 pivoted on a rubber bush 33. A rod 41 extends upwards from the end of this lever to a rocker 43, which, when the lid 13 is closed, is tilted in a clockwise direction by a lid locking pin 44 to hold the brake blocks clear of the pulley. When the lid is opened, the rod 41 is allowed to drop and the blocks 25 are pressed against the pulley by springs 35. The lever 29 also carries a plate 38 by which a plunger switch 37 is closed, to run the electric driving motor 20, when the lever is in its raised position and the lid is closed. By this means, the motor can only be switched on when the brakes are released and vice versa. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown) the brake lever is actuated by cam means by rotating a vertical rod, the top of which carries a radial handle which lies over the lid to prevent it being opened when the motor is switched on.
