Abstract

647,545. Recording apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Dec. 16, 1947, No. 33195. [Class 106 (iv)] [Also in Groups XX and XL (c)] A reversible drum-to-drum tape, film, or like winding mechanism is characterized in that the winding drums are mechanically coupled to the planet wheels of a gear mechanism of the epicyclic type, the planet wheels being biassed with respect to the sun wheel so as to maintain the tape in tension, and the gear ratios being so chosen that the epicyclic movement of the planet wheels compensates for the effects of increase and decrease in effective drum diameters due to winding of the tape. As shown, the arrangement is suitable for indicating the tuning of a radio receiver and is provided with a tape T marked with a scale and passing over a jockey pulley J, the ends of the tape being respectively fixed to similar spools S1, S2. Each spool is attached to the shaft of one of two similar gear-wheels PG1, PG2, arranged as the planet wheels of an inner wheel SG and running in bearings in the ends of links R1, R2, pivotally mounted on the shaft of the inner wheel, and spring-biassed in the direction of the arrows A1, A2 to keep tension on the tape. The drive may be applied to one of the planet wheels, the inner wheel, or the intermediate wheel J, and an expression is given for calculating the gear ratio to give the required compensation. Friction wheels may be used instead of toothed gear-wheels. In an alternative arrangement for a two-waveband radio receiver, Fig. 3 (not shown), two indicator tapes running at different speeds are provided each having an epicyclic gear mechanism arranged around a common inner wheel.
