Abstract

A reel stand 1 comprises means for supporting two or more reels (17, 19, Fig. 2, not shown) for independent rotation, in a running position R2, about a common axis between a pair of supporting arms 5 to permit webs to be drawn from the reels simultaneously, all the webs passing over a common roller 22 mounted on spring or fluidpressure loaded arms 24 which are pivoted on a shaft 25 coupled to a monitoring unit M designed to produce an output dependent upon the combined tensions in the webs; the periphery of each reel is engaged by one or more straps 26 each of which has one end fixed to an anchoring point 27 and the other end fixed to a respective cam 28 in such a manner that rotation of the cam about its axis in one direction or the other wraps or unwraps the strap 26 on the cam surface. Movement of all the cams 28 is controlled by a pneumatic cylinder 35 responsive to the output from the unit M. The cams thus provide a variable ratio between the tension applied by the cylinder 35 and that imparted by the straps 26 at the reels whereby the tensions in. the straps 26 are varied in such a sense as to maintain the web tensions constant despite differences in the reel diameters. The reel stand 1 may include a two or more armed spider so that replacement reels R1 may be brought into the running position R2, and the stand 1 may be associated with means (not shown) for severing the expiring webs and joining the ends of the new webs to the severed ends of the expiring webs when the replacement reels have been run up to the appropriate speed. The shaft (8) which carries the reels (17), (19), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be provided with means for adjusting either reel relative to the complete assembly to ensure that lateral register is maintained.
