[Also in Division F2] In apparatus, e.g. dyeing machines, in which a web of material can be wound from one roller on to another, and vice versa, the drive for each roller comprises a drive disc 2a, 2b engaging a spherical segment 3a, 3b to rotate the segment about a diametral axis, each segment being coupled to its roller to rotate it. The segments 3a, 3b are connected so as to be simultaneously pivoted about horizontal diametral axes as winding proceeds, so that the disc 2a or 2b associated with the unwinding roller contacts parts of its spherical segment of decreasing radius from the axis of rotation so as to increase the rotational speed of the roller as the material thereon decreases in diameter and thus maintain the web speed constant. Similarly, the disc associated with the winding roller contact parts of its spherical segment of increasing radius so as to decrease the rotational speed of the roller as the material thereon increases in diameter. The pivoting of the segments is controlled by a loaded floating roller 31 which moves upwardly as winding proceeds. The segment 3a has fixed to it a diametral shaft 4a mounted in bearings 6a in a tubular member 5a fixed to another tubular member 7a rotatably mounted in the machine frame. The member 7a carries the shaft of its roller, which shaft is coupled to the shaft 4a by bevel gearing 10a, 11a. The segment 3b is similarly mounted and coupled to its roller. In addition, it carries a toothed segment 40 engage by a worm 41 forming part of a regulator 42 operated by movement of the roller 31 through links 32, 44. A link 43 connects the two segments 3a, 3b so that movement of the roller 31 causes simultaneous movement of both segments.
