Abstract

[Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] A driving mechanism for winding machines of the kind in which a band-shaped or threadshaped material is wound from one or more feed rollers on one or more winding-up rollers, comprises a pair of overlapping discs rotatable about parallel axes, one of the discs 1 being connected to drive the feed roller or rollers and the other of said discs 2 being connected to drive the winding roller or rollers, and a friction roller 4 driving both the discs and mounted therebetween with its axis normally contained in the plane of the axes of the discs and extending at right angles to the axes of the discs and so as to be capable of movement along its axis and substantially at right angles to its axis in a direction parallel to the discs under the action of a force which decreases when the roller moves in the direction of the force and increases when the roller moves in the opposite direction. As shown, chrome steel discs 1 and 2 are rotatable about their axes, the disc 1 having a shaft connected by gearing to a winding roller (not shown), the disc 2 being similarly connected to an unwinding shaft (not shown). Both discs engage a friction roller 4 slidable along and rotatable on a shaft 5 supported in a bearing 6, the shaft 5 being driven by a motor, not shown, in the direction 9 to rotate the discs 1, 2 in the directions 10, 11 respectively. An increase in diameter of material on the winding roller causes an increase in tension of the material being wound, thereby causing the roller to move downwardly against a spring 7 to alter the drive ratio between the discs 1, 2 and roller 4 by movement, to the left, of the roller 4 along its shaft 5 to reduce the speed of the winding roller. Similarly, a reduction in tension causes an increase in speed of the winding roller by movement to the right of the roller along its shaft 5. The tension of the spring 7 is adjustable such that the tension of the material may be varied. In a modification, the shaft carrying the friction roller may be movable as a whole at right angles to its longitudinal direction instead of being rotatable about the bearing 6 and the spring 7 may be replaced by electromagnetic, pneumatic or hydraulic means.
