Abstract

1402816 Controlling relation between traverse guide and package surface JOHNSMANVILLE CORP 25 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972[ 44818/73 Heading D1J A yarn winding apparatus of the kind in which the mandrel of a yarn package 32, Fig 5, is automatically moved away from a traverse guide 38 as the package increases in diameter comprises a traverse shaft 48, Fig 3, that is rotatable by a pulley 40 to cause the guide 38 to reciprocate and a package winding mandrel shaft 68 that is rotatable by a pulley 80 mounted on a carriage 72, the carriage 72 being movable in a straight line to and from the shaft 48. The carriage 72 carries an idler pulley 92 and there is a further idler pulley 94 that is normally fixed in position on the machine frame. A timing belt 116 runs around the four pulleys as shown, the arrangement being such that even though the carriage 72 is moved along support rods 82, 84 no shange in length of the timing belt 116 is necessary. Controlling the movement of the carriage 72. Below the traverse guide 38, Fig 5, is a roller 126 running in gas bearings and spring biassed against the package 32. As the package increases in diameter the roller 126 is displaced to rock an arm 128 about a shaft 30 and so displace a rod (142) Fig 6 (not shown) to a setting where it completes a circuit controlling a four-way valve for a hydraulic cylinder 86 that is used to move the carriage 72 along the rods 82, 84. When the circuit is closed the valve permits the carriage 72 to move away from the traverse guide 38. When the circuit is open the valve closes and stops the carriage 72. A damper mechanism (148), Fig 6, prevents the roller 126 from becoming operative in response to jolts and vibrations. Mandrel drive. The mandrel assembly is a motor with the mandrel forming the rotor of the motor and the shaft 68 forming the stator of the motor. Traverse. The pulley 40 and shaft 48 drive a drum and the yarn guide 38 has a follower member that slides in an endless groove in the drum. The pulley 94 has means 106-112 whereby its setting is adjustable. The apparatus is stated to keep a constant angle of introduction and departure between the strand 30 and the strand guide 38, and a constant angle of introduction between the strand and the package 32.
