Abstract
931,178. Drawing wire. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. April 11, 1962 [Aug. 28, 1961], No. 14009/62. Class 83 (4). A wire drawing machine comprises a work surface, independently driven blocks longitudinally spaced on said surface, a carriage between each of said blocks, laterally movable on said surface, said carriage and work surface having rotatable means to engage a loop of wire passing between the blocks, said carriage being normally urged in one direction by fluid tensioning means against the tension of the wire and block speed control mechanisms actuated through the linear positioning of said carriage. The drawing blocks 11, 12, 13, 14 are mounted on vertical axes above a work surface 16, each block is driven by a motor such as 21, and between each two blocks is a die such as 17. The speed of each motor is controlled by independent means, for example 29 which controls the motor 21. These means comprise a fixed portion 36 and a movable portion 37 each consisting of two rotatable sheaves, and a guide portion 38 connected to the movable portion. The fixed portion 36 is secured to the work surface 16 and has two sheaves 41 and 42 and a non-rotating wire guard which extends partially round the sheave 42. The movable portion 37 consists of a C-shaped carriage 43 on which are mounted two sheaves 44 and 45 angularly disposed in relation to each other. Attached to the underside of the carriage are two rollers which run on a rail mounted on the surface 16. The guide 38 comprises a bracket 52 fastened to a support 33, and having pivoted to it, by a vertical pin 53, an intermediate member 54. Connected to the intermediate member by hinge pins 57 and 58 are pairs of transversely spaced lever members 55 and 56 which at their outer ends are pivoted to a junction member 59. The carriage 43 is connected by two pairs of parallel links 63, 64 to the junction member 59. A shaft 49 extends rearwardly from the carriage and supports a coil spring 51 which normally urges the carriage toward the fixed portion 36. Also attached to the carriage is a chain 67, the other end of which is coupled to a piston travelling in an air cylinder, which acts to draw the carriage away from the fixed portion 36. The chain passes round a sprocket 68 on the shaft of which is mounted a cam which actuates a speed controller in the motor circuit. The mechanism is arranged so that if the loop of wire passing round the four sheaves 41, 42, 44 and 45 increases in length, the carriage 43 moves away from the fixed portion 36 and operates the speed controller to reduce the speed of the motor 21. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown), the junction member is replaced by a bell-crank having a vertical arm connected by two parallel pairs of links to the intermediate member, and a horizontal member similarly connected to the carriage 43.
