Abstract

569,421. Variable-speed belt gearing. VOEGELI, W. June 28, 1943, No. 10443. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1942. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Variable-speed gearing comprises four expanding cone pulleys 26, 28, 32, 34, each with one flange axially fixed and the other axially movable, the pulleys 26, 32 being on the driving and driven shafts 54, 64, respectively, and pulleys 28, 34, formed as a single duplex pulley, being mounted on a countershaft 92. A casing 112 supporting the countershaft 92 is pivoted at 116 to the gear casing 20 so that it can be swung towards the shafts 54, 64. Gear changing is effected by turning a handle 84 to move through rack-and-pinion gearing 78, 80, the movable sleeves 38, 44 of the pulleys 26, 32. The tension of the belts 24, 30 cause variation of the diameters of the pulleys 28, 34. At the same time an eccentric 128, on the shaft 82 of the handle 84, moves an eccentric rod 126 screwed to a rod 118 having a ball connection 120 with a projection 122 on the casing 112, thus allowing the countershaft 92 to move towards the shafts 54, 64. Initial tension of the belts 24, 30 may be adjusted by rotation of the shaft 118 which has a head 130 frictionally secured thereto to prevent excessive tensioning. When applied to a lathe a dial 136 is provided adjacent the handle 84. The dial 136 has an outer logarithmical scale indicating cutting speeds and an inner geometrical scale indicating the diameter of the workpiece corresponding to the cutting speed and number of revolutions. The outer scale co-operates with a pointer 142 on the casing'20 and the inner scale with a pointer 144 on the handle 84.
