745,854. Variable speed gearing. INDUSTRIAKTIEBOLAGET LUXOR. Sept. 22, 1953 [Sept. 29, 1952], No. 26114/53. Class 80(2) A speed governor, between a driving shaft 2 and, e.g., the turntable (not shown) of a gramophone, comprises a, variable ratio friction gear 5, 10 and a centrifugal device 3 on the driving shaft controlling the gear ratio to give a constant speed to a driven shaft 11. The friction gear consists of a roller 5 of generally conical shape engaging a disc 10. Weights 3, on levers 4, 6 pivoted on the roller and connected by links 7 to a disc 8 fast on the driving shaft, fly out under the action of centrifugal force to move the roller axially on the driving shaft, against the force of a spring 9, and vary the ratio. The generatrix of the roller 5 is determined empirically from the characteristics of the centrifugal device so that the disc 10 is always driven at a constant speed. The roller 5 is also so shaped that it does not engage the disc 10 when the device is at rest. In a modified form, a driving disc is moved axially with respect to a driven roller.
