Abstract

894,354. Friction clutches. VAN DOORNE, H. J. Jan. 19, 1960 [Jan. 21, 1959], No. 1973/60. Class 80 (2). A centrifugal friction clutch comprises pairs of shoes 4, 5 with common pivots 3 and subjected to control springs 6, 7 of different loadings in order that the individual shoes may become operative at different speeds, each leading shoe 4 being self-energizing while the trailing shoe is not, the springs 6, 7 being so arranged that shoe 4 becomes effective at a higher speed than shoe 5. In the construction according to Fig. 3, the control spring 13 of each trailing shoe 5 is connected to an arm 10 movable between stops 11, 12, so that as the speed increases the centrifugal effect of arm 10 reduces the effectiveness of shoe 5. A similar effect may be obtained by fitting a counterweight to the shoe 5, Fig. 5 (not shown). By this means the leading shoe 4 has a continuously rising torque-speed characteristic, while that of trailing shoe 5 may rise non-uniformly, or rise to a maximum and then fall.
