666,122. Friction clutches. LINDSAY, Ltd., H., and LINDSAY, H. March 22, 1947, No. 7899/47. Class 80 (ii). In a plate clutch connecting a loose wheel or pulley 2 to its driving shaft 1, the pulley 2 and a flyweight carrier 8 are independently journalled on a sleeve 5, keyed on the shaft 1 and having driving end flanges 3, 4, axially pivoted flyweights 10 acting through screws 12 and nuts 13 to press the carrier 8 into frictional contact with the pulley 2, the latter into frictional contact with the flange 3, and a ring 11, having studs 17 axially slidable in the carrier, into frictional contact with the flange 4. Teeth 14 on the weights 10 mesh a loose thrust-equalizing ring 16 connected to the carrier 8 by a coil spring 19 acting to restrain the weights and adjustable by insertion of its end into one of a series of holes such as 20 in the carrier. The weights 10 may project tangentially either right or left handedly, or be arranged in pairs of opposite handing with correspondingly handed screws 12. Adjustable springs 18 assist initial clutch engagement, which may be facilitated by providing the bore of the carrier 8 with friction material 22, or hindered by mounting the carrier on ball or roller bearings. Wear on the clutch friction surfaces may be taken up by rotating the nuts 13 in the carrier 8 after slackening locking screws 21. More than one carrier unit may be employed.
