Abstract

Class 80 (2) In a centrifugal friction clutch in which centrifugal weights 5, guided in a carrier 4 and tending to engage the clutch in accordance with speed against the action of a garter spring 6, are pivoted on one arm 9a of levers 9 pivoted on pins 10 mounted in the carrier 4, while pins 11 carried by a hub 3 fixed to the driven shaft 1 engage the other arm 9b of the levers 9 and tend to disengage the clutch in accordance with driven load, the pins 11 are adjustable in radial slots 12 in the hub 3 so as to vary the effective length of the arms 9b and thus control the effect of load. The pins 11 may be adjusted manually by axial movement of an internally-coned member 27, Fig. 1, or automatically by spring-loaded centrifugal weights 29, Fig. 4, pivoted on one arm of levers 31 pivoted on hub 3, the pins 11 being carried by the other arm of the levers. As shown, the weights 5 cause discs 7 to be applied against the sides of a driving drum 20. Auxiliary centrifugal weights 21 carried by the drum 20 act, through a thrust bearing 25 and balls 26 engaged in holes in the arms 9b and bearing against the carrier 4, to oppose clutch engagement.
