Abstract

919,734. Friction clutches. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 22, 1961 [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 34321/60. Class 80 (2). In a centrifugal mechanism, such as that for actuating a disc clutch, centrifugal weights are associated with axial thrust transmitting means in such a way that the mechanical advantage of the arrangement, defined as the ratio of the axial force to the centrifugal force, first decreases with increase of speed of rotation through a lower speed range and then increases with increasing speed through a higher range so that the mechanical advantage is a minimum at a speed representing the upper end of the lower range and the lower end of the upper range. In the arrangement shown, pivoted clutch weights 13 bear against rollers 17 on the pressure plate 10 through cam-shaped nose portions 16 giving the desired operating characteristics. Alternatively, radially operating weights may move between appropriately shaped surfaces on the cover and pressure plates. The invention may also be applied to centrifugal governors.
