Abstract
859,501. Friction clutches. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. May 20, 1959 [Feb. 21, 1958], No. 5757/58. Class 80 (2). In a friction clutch of the type in which a disc 3 is engaged between a driving flywheel 1 and a pressure plate 2 provided with release springs 33, by centrifugal masses 20, the latter act on the pressure plate through struts 24, and through further struts 21 act on the outer ends of radial levers 10 bearing near their inner ends against engaging springs 29 and at their inner ends against a release plate 37. The levers 10 near their outer ends engage pivotpins 11 on anchor members 9 secured within a cover-plate 6 bolted to the flywheel 1, and the springs 29 are located in recesses formed in the levers 10 and the cover 6. The levers 10 pass through openings 28 in the cover, the edges 32 of these openings acting as limit stops for the levers. Other embodiments provide for alternative forms of fulcrums, fulcrum adjustment, and spring loading in one of which, Fig. 3 (not shown), the clutch is capable of engagement independently of centrifugal operation, the openings 28 being of such size as to permit unrestricted movement of the levers 10, the extent of movement being determined by movable stops which may constitute the release bearing.
