Abstract
1,210,329. Friction clutches. SOC. ANON FRANCAISE DU FERODO. 12 Dec., 1968 [15 Dec., 1967; 21 June, 1968], No. 59200/68. Heading F2C. A diaphragm clutch for use in self-propelled vehicles includes a diaphragm bearer element subject to two opposing forces, one provided by a prestressed resilient device and the other being variable as a function of the speed of a driving part of the clutch. In Fig. 1 a driving shaft M is running at idling speed and a diaphragm bearer 15 is urged away from a reaction plate 10 by prestressed springs 26. Centrifugal weights 27 are pivoted to the plate 10 and remain in the shown position so long as the shaft M does not exceed idling speed. When this speed is exceeded the weights 27 pivot to the position shown in Fig. 2, the action of the springs 26 is overcome and a friction plate 12 is engaged by a thrust plate 11 under the action of a diaphragm 16. Such action is precluded at idling speed, Fig. 1, since clips 25, 25a on the thrust plate 11 are in abutment with the diaphragm bearer 15. Above idling speed, the user, by a thrust bearing 19, 20, may control the clutch in the conventional way. Light springs 32 assist in freeing the plate 12. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the weights (27) act on the diaphragm bearer (15) by links (70). In Fig. 4 a spring washer 26b urges the diaphragm bearer 15 to the left and away from a cover 40 secured to a hub 42 fast on the driving shaft M. Above idling speed, weights 27 cause the bearer 15 to move to the right, Fig. 10 (not shown). As before, the thrust bearing 20 provides for declutching by a user.
