Abstract

850,673. Centrifugal clutches. SOC. D'APPAREILS DE CONTROLE ET D'EQUIPEMENT DES MOTEURS S.A.C.E.M. Jan. 20, 1959 [Jan. 28, 1958], No. 2127/59. Class 80 (2). In a centrifugal clutch intended particularly for use on a cycle having an auxiliary engine, the friction elements 28, 29 are separate from the centrifugal masses 24, 25, each being carried on arms pivoted at 31, 32 to a member 30 mounted on the engine shaft 6, springs 26, 27 being interposed between the masses 24, 25 and arms 33, 34 carrying the friction elements 27, 28 to maintain the latter in contact with a drum 9, connected to the tyre-engaging roller, with a force insufficient to cause an appreciable torque between the driving and driven members at low engine speeds, and the masses 24, 25 are interconnected by springs 35, 36 so that they can only effect driving engagement of elements 28, 29 at speeds higher than the idling speed. The arrangement is such that elements 28. 29 may be wedged against drum 9 to transmit the torque necessary to start the engine. The angle A subtended at the middle of each friction element by the pivot 31 or 32 and the centre of shaft 6 is not greater than the angle of friction, being between 20 and 30 degrees.
