Abstract

513,914. Propelling aircraft; clutches. JULIEN, M. F. A. March 30, 1938, No. 9760. Convention date, April 6, 1937. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXIV] A power transmission system includes a power shaft adapted to be connected to a member having a large inertia such as a flywheel at speeds below or in the range of a critical speed and means for flexibly connecting said inertia member thereto at speeds above said critical speed; In one form, a screw - propeller 5 is driven from crankshaft 1 through a resilient coupling 3 or directly on closing a manually, power, or automatically operated clutch 6. In a modification, the resilient coupling comprises a torsion tube on which the screw-propeller is mounted. When applied to a motor-car transmission; the resilient coupling and clutch are disposed in parallel on the engine side of the usual clutch. In a further modification, a flywheel which may be resiliently connected to the shaft may be disconnected at high speeds. A flywheel may be disposed between the resilient coupling and the clutch. More than one flywheel and more than one coupling may be arranged in one system. In a specific construction, a sleeve 23, Fig. 14, is secured on a crank-shaft 20 and carries a plate 26 which drives by means of grooves, discs or rings 27, 27<1> faced with friction lining. A flywheel 28 is freely rotatable on the sleeve and carries discs 30, 31, 32, the disc 31 is movable under spring pressure, to close the clutch formed by the discs 30. 27, 32, 27' and 31, so that the flywheel is positively connected to the crank-shaft. With increasing speed weighted levers 35 move under the action of centrifugal force to open the clutch, in which case, the flywheel is connected to the shaft through an elastic member 42. The drive is taken from the flywheel through a member 45.
