Abstract

465,408. Clutches; propelling aircraft. PROPELLO INVENTIONS, Ltd., and YOXALL, J. Nov. 1, 1935, No. 30267. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A friction or dog clutch operated solely by fluid pressure acting through an expansible bellows is arranged in series with a fluid coupling or torqueconverter. As shown, a friction clutch between a shaft 2, connected to the engine of a gyroplane, and the primary element 14 of a hydraulic coupling, the driven element 16 of which is connected to a shaft 6, geared to the rotor, comprises a disc 7 which is splined on the shaft 2 and which has a rim of V-section adapted to be gripped between a V- section lining 8 in an annular recess in the member 14 and a V-section facing 10 on a ring 9 splined in the member 14. The ring 9 is secured to one end of an annular metallic bellows 43, the other end of which is secured to an end plate 44 of the member 14. Fluid under pressure is supplied from a pipe 51 through passages 46, 47 to the interior of the bellows so as to cause the latter to expand longitudinally and engage the clutch. The resiliency of the bellows ensures disengagement on release of the fluid pressure, and a spring 53 normally maintains the disc 7 in an intermediate position. The fluid under pressure is supplied by a hand or motor pump provided with a pressure gauge. Specifications 414,641, 448,560, [both in Group XXIX], and 452,922 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, a second clutch is provided between the hydraulic coupling and the rotor, which second clutch may be similar to the first clutch.
