Abstract

225,133. Ashworth, P. B. May 23, 1924. Variable-speed friction gearing comprises means not including a spring for automatically moving both driving-disc 5 and driven-disc 6 so as to adjust the speed ratio to the load. These discs or rollers are movable togther across the face of idle discs 16, and two cam governing devices act against one another, having different positions of balance, for different loads. The disc 6 has a pin and cam connection 13, 12 with a drum 4 fast on the load shaft 2. The disc 5 has an opposed cam connection 10, 11 with a drum 3 fast on the driving-shaft 1. In the form shown, a centrifugal governor sensitive to variations in the speed of the engine participates in the speed control. Loose centrifugal balls 20 in tapering annular recesses 22 thrust a cup member 21 to the left against a spring 17. The member 21 carries with it a casing 14 and the idlers 16, which idlers being moved over the rollers 5, 6, effect speed adjustment.
