835,910. Controlling change-speed gearing. EBERT, H. Jan. 9, 1957 [Jan. 21, 1956], No. 899/57. Class 80 (2). An infinitely variable gear driven by an internal combustion engine is adjusted by hydraulic means responsive to a distributer valve acted upon by a spring loaded by the accelerator and by centrifugal governors driven from the input and output shafts of the gear. An infinitely variable hydrostatic or other gear 1 has the reduction ratio between the input shaft 2 and output shaft 3 varied by a piston 5 movable by oil pressure directed to one side or the other by a slide valve 17 in a rotating ported sleeve 18. The sleeve 18 is rotated by a gear 23 connected to the input side of the gear 1, and carries governor weights 24 acting on the outer race of a ball bearing 25 secured to the valve 17. The valve 17 is also loaded by a spring 26 one end of which is connected to the inner race of bearing 25, and the other end is connected to a pin 16 actuated by an accelerator pedal 15 connected to the engine throttle 10. A second set of governor weights 29 driven by gear 28 and a sleeve 27 from the output side of the gear 1 also load the valve 17. The arrangement of the two governors and the accelerator controlled spring is such that the engine speed is dependent on the accelerator position and the output speed. Full engine speed is not obtainable at full throttle until the output speed (or road speed) has reached a predetermined value.
