Abstract

878,850. Change-speed control. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. May 9, 1958 [May 11, 1957], No. 14920/58. Class 80 (2). In a vehicle having a steplessly variable-speed gear the ratio is automatically varied in such a way that each setting of the engine throttle valve corresponds to a definite engine speed. As shown, the ratio of an expanding pulley gear 106, 107 is controlled by a servomotor S supplied with liquid by an internal gear pump 35 through a control valve V. Valve V comprises co-operating sleeves 38, 42 controlled by a footoperated pedal 2 and an engine driven governor G respectively. Pedal 2 is connected by a rack and pinion 4, 6 to a shaft 7 which is connected by a rack and pinion 5, 79 to the sleeve 38. Shaft 7 is also connected through a cam mechanism to the engine throttle valve 33. With the pedal 2 in a particular position, if the load varies (e.g. due to hill climbing), the engine speed alters and governor G displaces sleeve 42 so that lands 44, 45 on the sleeve uncover ports 39, 40 in sleeve 38. Pump 35, which is driven by the engine shaft 46, then supplies liquid through a duct 82 and port 39 or 40 to the servomotor to vary the gear ratio. As the ratio varies the engine speed is restored to its former value and sleeve 42 is restored to its former position by the governor. On operating pedal 2 the throttle valve 33 is moved to a new position and valve sleeve 38 is moved axially, uncovering ports 39, 40 so that the servo motor is supplied with liquid to alter the gear ratio. The engine speed changes due to the change in ratio and in the setting of the throttle so that the sleeve 42 is moved by the governor to close ports 39, 40. The governor can be adjusted by varying the loading of a spring 68 so as to give a desired engine speed for any particular setting of the throttle. It is thus possible to ensure that the engine always gives its most economical performance.
