Abstract

929,326. Expanding pulley gearing. W. REIMERS. Jan. 25, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 2914/62. Class 80 (2). In an expanding pulley gearing each of two pulleys has a single movable flange urged axially by a mechanical device when that pulley is the driven pulley, and a separate hydraulic turning device to transmit torque to the pulley when that pulley is the driving pulley, the flexible driving member being held in equilibrium by the pressure in the hydraulic device which also controls the transmission ratio. Two pulleys comprising conical disc members 3, 4 and 5, 6 are substantially identical and are coupled by a link chain 11. The discs 3, 4 are rotatably mounted on a shaft 1 having a shoulder 9, preventing rightward movement of disc 3, and a cam ring 18 having a helical cam track 16 engaged through balls 20 with a corresponding track 14 on the axially movable disc 4. A sleeve 38 rigid with the disc 4 is splined to a housing 28 rotatable on the shaft 1 and having radial partitions 31 corresponding with similar partitions 27 rigid with the shaft to provide a pressure chamber 33 fed from a bore 34 in the shaft 1. A piston control valve 42, fed with pressure oil from a pump 40 through a relief valve, controls the admission and exhaust of fluid to the pressure chambers 33 through lines 55, 56; exhaust being maintained at a slight positive pressure by a second relief valve 54. The valve is controlled to vary the transmission ratio by a manual lever acting at 61 on a balance link 60 actuated at 62 by the position of the disc 6 to produce equilibrium in the system. The arrangement is such that when shaft 1 is driving shaft 2 at a predetermined ratio, the position of the flange 6 is determined by the load torque acting through the cam tracks 15, 17 and the torque through pulley 3, 4 is transmitted by the hydraulic turning device which rotates the flange 4 to prevent overrun of the cam tracks 14, 16. On torque reversal due to overrun the hydraulic device of pulley 5, 6 prevents overrun of cam tracks 15, 17 and the cam tracks 14, 16 determine the position of the flange 4.
