Abstract
664,497. Centrifugal governors. PACKARD MOTOR CAR CO. April 12, 1948 [April 12, 1947], No. 10117/48. Class 57 [Also in Group XXIV] A centrifugal governor E, driven by the output shaft of a motor-vehicle change-speed gear, which it automatically controls, is supplied with oil at an inlet 598 by a constantpressure pump 577 driven by the governor shaft 346, and supplies speed-responsive pressure to an outlet 576, leading to ratiocontrolling shift - valves 508, 548, under control of an axially-slidable inner valve-element 604, which is moved upwardly, in opposition to governed outlet pressure acting on its upper face, by centrifugal masses 618 pivoted at 620 on the governorshaft. Initially the masses act upwardly on the valve-element 604 through a spring 614 and the linkage is such that over this range the governed pressure is proportional to the first power of the vehicle-speed. Above a predetermined vehicle-speed (53 m.p.h.) a pin 617, actuated by the masses, contacts the valve-element 604, which is thereby moved positively by the masses, resulting in further increase in governed pressure being proportional to the second power of the speed.
