Abstract

298,519. Sinclair, H. July 6, 1927. Driving-arrangements.-In load-equalizing machinery, a constant-speed driving machine, such as an electric motor, is coupled to the driven machine, such as a rolling mil! or electric generator, by a connection of continuously variable speed ratio, such as a hydraulic coupling of the F÷ttinger type, the driven machine being provided with a flywheel; the speed ratio of the coupling may be controlled so as to maintain a constant torque on the driving motor, and means may be provided for varying, in predetermined relation to the speed or other function of the connected machine, the value of the full-load torque transmitted by the coupling. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a synchronous motor 1 driving through a hydraulic coupling 3, a flywheel 4 and a Ward Leonard generator 5. A torque motor 6 in the circuit of the motor 1 controls the inlet valve 8 and/or outlet valve of the coupling, and the full-load torque may be adjusted by means of a spring 11 of adjustable tension. When the prime mover is not electrical, the coupling is controlled from a mechanical torque governor consisting of a Wellman-Bibby or other resilient coupling, a ring 35, Fig. 5, having internal teeth meshing with axial teeth 34 and helical teeth 38 being moved axially in proportion to the torque, and acting through multiplying levers 40, a slidable collar 41, and lever 18 on the inlet and/or outlet valve. In order that the full-load torque may vary with speed &c., a centrifugal governor, pressure-operated piston, or other member may act on the parts controlling the hydraulic coupling.
