Abstract

504,390. Centrifugal governors. VOITH, W., VOITH, H., and VOITH, H., (trading as VOITH, J. M., [Firm of]). Oct. 26, 1937, No. 29278. Convention date, Oct. 29, 1936. [Class 57] [Also in Group XXIX] A hydraulic power transmitter of the kinetic type yielding two or more speed stages is provided with a centrifugal speed-responsive regulator for effecting gear-changing between said speed stages, wherein, for the purpose of stabilizing the change point, that is for the purpose of causing the change from a lowerspeed stage to the next higher-speed stage to occur at a speed higher than that at which the opposite change occurs, the centrifugal masses of the regulator are adapted to be loaded with-restoring forces of different magnitudes in succession and the stiffness and the initial straining of the resilient restoring means for the centrifugal masses of the regulator are so selected that they produce an unstable characteristic for each gear change, that is to say, the increase or decrease in restoring force. exerted by the restoring means when they are compressed or extended during a gear change, is smaller than the increase or decrease in centrifugal force on the centrifugal masses, due to their displacement between their innermost and outermost positions determining such change. In a transmitter comprising, Fig. 1, a torqueconverter W, a coupling K<2> associated with speed reducing gear G, and a coupling K<1>, the regulator R belt-driven from the output shaft S actuates a valve 9 controlling selective filling of the turbo-circuits. The regulator comprises, Fig. 2, a casing 3 mounted on a shaft 2 driven by a pulley 1 ; centrifugal masses 4 are mounted in grooves on the casing and covered by a disc 5, acted upon by two springs 6, 7 ; initially the spring 6 acts alone until a stop 8 is reached, and thereafter the springs act in conjunction. In this arrangement, the valve 9 actuated by the regulator acts as a pilot valve for the hydraulic actuation of the valves A, B, C controlling selective filling of the turbo-circuits. In a modification, Fig. 3, the masses 4 are mounted between discs 3', 3<11> acted upon by springs 12, 13 respectively, and having stops 8, 11.
