Abstract

Variable-speed ratchet gearing is controlled automatically by a centrifugal variable-throw driving crank 23 and comprises a centrifugally controlled clutch 50 for obtaining a solid high-speed drive. Centrifugal weights 5, 6, Fig. 1, slide radially against springs between discs 7 secured to a driving-shaft 1. The weights are co-ordinated by pairs of links 10 Fig. 2, and blocks 13 slidable on the discs 7. The variable throw pin 23 is carried by a lever 21 which is pivoted at 22 to a disc 7 and is engaged by a pin 17 projecting from a weight 5. The pin 23, which moves as the weights fly out, engages the centre of radiating jointed links 25 - - 27, Fig. 4, which are pivoted upon blocks 29 reciprocated in radial slots 30 in a loose disc 31, which is kept from turning backwards by detent pawls 51. The blocks 29 are connected by push-rods 39 to circumferentiallyconstrained blocks 37 carrying spring pawls which drive a ratchet wheel in one direction. The wheel 35 is in a central aperture in the disc 31 and is fast on the driven shaft 2. Thus the speed of the shaft 2 rises with the throw of the crank, which is controlled by the weights 5, 6. The disc 31 is supported on a spider 32, Fig. 1, from a loose sleeve 33 which carries a clutch member 40. When the speed of the shaft 2 rises sufficiently, balls 42 fly out against springs 44 and through levers thrust a clutch member 50 against member 40. This causes the gearing and disc 31 to turn solid. Weights 56, Fig. 4, then swing the detents 51 inwards clear.
