Abstract
394,148. Transmitting rotary motion; variable-speed gearing. BONNET, M., 8, Place Vintimille, Paris. July 21, 1932, No. 20596. Convention date, July 25, 1931. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii).] Rotary motion is transmitted with speed reduction between a rotary eccentric 3, Fig. 1, fast on a driving-shaft 1 and an aligned driven shaft 2 through pawls or struts 11, Fig. 2, which stub in succession against the inner surface of a drum 4 eccentric to a wheel 10 to which the pawls 11 are pivoted at 12. The drum 4 which is supported loosely upon the eccentric 3 is connected by links 5, Fig. 4, a frame 59, and links 6 to a fixed base so as to be incapable of rotation. The drum 4 therefore wabbles eccentrically round the wheel 10. The pawls 11 are spring-pulled so as to stub on the drum 4 in succession so that the wheel 10 is driven round and imparts a continuous drive to the shaft 2. Provision may be made for disconnecting the drive by allowing the frame 59 to rotate freely. A variable-speed form is shown in Figs. 5, 9, and 10. The hub 61 of a bicvcle wheel turns on a fixed axle 42 and is secured to a wheel 10 with pivots 12 for pawls 11 corresponding to similarly denoted parts in Fig. 1. The drum 4 is held against rotation about its own axis by a linkage inside it similar to that of Fig. 4 and anchored to a non-rotary frame 41 fast on the axle 42. The eccentric 3 on which the frame 4 is loosely carried is of variable throw. The load resistance thrusts the eccentric 3 to more concentric lower-speed positions and this thrust is balanced by the thrust of a control spring 55, so that the speed transmitted adjusts itself automatically to the load. The eccentric 3 is adapted to slide radially between two cheeks 27, 31 which are fast to a hub 28, which is loose on the axle 42 and driven by a sprocket 19 driven from a pedal chainwheel (not shown). The eccentric has for this purpose a slot 35, Fig. 9, with parallel sides in each of which is a slot 34 inclined at 45‹. The slots 34 are engaged by diametral pins 33, Fig. 10, projecting from a ring 32 which is slidably splined at 32a upon the hub 28. The drive passes through the cheek 27, Fig. 5, and hub 28 to the ring 32 and across from the pins to the grooves 34. The eccentric 3 yields or is moved inwards, and the ring 32 slides to the right of Fig. 5, thereby compressing the spring 55, to which it is connected by plungers 58. When a balance is attained, the drive passes according to the speed ratio position reached.
