Abstract

615,358. Variable-speed gearing. ILETT, J. July 11, 1946, No. 20765. [Class 80 (ii)] An epicyclic variable-speed gear comprises a sun-wheel 1 on a shaft 2, planet-wheels 3, an annulus 5 on a shaft 14 and a worm-wheel 7 secured to the planet carrier 4 by a sleeve 6 which meshes a worm 8 clutched to a control shaft 9. A friction disc 10 mounted on the shaft 9 engages the face of a friction disc 11, the shaft 13 of which has a toothed pinion 12 engaging external teeth 5a on the periphery of the annulus 5. Either shaft 1, 14 may be the driving or driven shaft. Speed variations may be effected by axial movement of the shaft 9 by means of a lever 20 causing the disc 10 to move across the face of the disc 11. The clutch between worm 8 and shaft 9, Fig. 6, comprises complementary dog teeth on worm 8 and a sleeve 16 splined to shaft 9, which are urged together by a spring 17. A free-wheel mechanism may be incorporated to permit the driven member to rotate in one direction only. The adjustment of the friction drive may be effected by manual control or by mechanical means. The friction disc 11 may be driven from the driving or driven members or a separate external source of power.
