Abstract

604,307. Variable-speed gearing. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., and KESTALL, T. A. Aug. 10, 1945, No. 20656. [Class 80 (ii)] A variable-speed gear comprises a rotatable housing in the form of a pulley 10 which is adapted to drive an output shaft 52 through one of a series of double-planet pinions 11, 12. These pinions are rotatably mounted upon shafts 14 which have eccentric ends supported in the housing so that rotation of the shafts moves the pinions into or out of engagement with sungears 16A or 17 on a sleeve 16 secured to the driven shaft 52 and fixed re-action gears 18 or 19. The rotation of the planet shafts 14 is effected by a control plate 21 carrying a gear 53 meshing with gears 20 on the ends of the shafts so. that only one set of planets are engaged at one time. The plate 21 is spring pressed outwardly and is provided with notches 56, Fig. 3, for engaging with pins 24 on the housing 10 for the various speed positions and also a neutral position when operated by a control knob 26. In a direct drive position the plate 21 is allowed to move outwards further so that projections 55 on a clutch plate 25 secured to the driven sleeve 16 engage in slots 21A in the plate 21 so that this plate transmits a solid drive from the housing 10 to the shaft 52. As shown, a direct drive and three indirect speeds are obtained but any number of speeds may be obtained according to the number of trains used.
