Abstract

586,724. Reversing gearing. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 12, 1944, No. 9153. Convention date, May 28, 1943. [Class 80 (ii)] Comprises gearing, particularly applicable to the driving of car-lighting and air-conditioning generators, in which a driven shaft 11 rotates in the same direction irrespective of the direction of rotation of the driving shaft 10. The shafts 10, 11 are coaxially mounted in a housing 12 in bearings 13, 14, and a yoke 15 is rotatably mounted on the shafts by bearings 16-19. A spur gear 21 is mounted on shaft 10 and a similar gear 22 on shaft 11. An intermediate shaft 23 mounted in the yoke by bearings 24, 25 carries a gear 26 which meshes with the gear 21, and a gear 27 which is connected to the gear 22 by an idler gear 28 on a shaft 29 mounted in the yoke in bearings 31, 32. An over-running clutch 33 controls the direction of rotation of the yoke, and a similar clutch 34 controls the direction of rotation of the shaft 23. For one direction of rotation of shaft 10, shaft 23 is locked and therefore the yoke and gears rotate solid. For the reverse direction, the yoke is locked and shaft 11 is driven in the same direction as before through the gears 21, 26, 27, 28, and 22. In a modification, the idler 28 may be omitted and the wheels 27, 22 replaced by sprockets connected by a chain.
