Abstract

702,809. Variable-speed gearing. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. Jan. 31, 1952 [Feb. 19, 1951], No. 2598/52. Class 80 (2) A change speed gear having epicyclic trains controlled by electromagnets is arranged so that in the neutral position of the gears at least one of the electromagnets is energized so that with the input shaft rotating and the output shaft stationary all the main rotative members of the gear are rotating except those rigid with the output shaft. Thus, when passing from the neutral to first speed, the inertia effects of the gear members balance one another and this avoids sudden torque reaction on the output shaft. As shown, two epicyclic trains are in series between input and output shafts 1, 5. Electromagnets 4, 7 are fixed to the shafts 1, 5 and electromagnets 3, 6 are fixed to the casing 12. The first train has planets 16 meshing a sun 13 on the shaft 1 and internal teeth 2 on a disc 14 between magnets 3, 4. The second train has planets 11 carried by the shaft 5 meshing a sun 19 on a disc 10 between the magnets 6, 7 and an internal gear 17 on the planet carrier of the first train. Four gear ratios are obtained, two of the four magnets being energized at each ratio. When the gear lever is in neutral position it engages contacts 8, 9 to energize magnet 4 so that with the output shaft 5 stationary rotation of the shaft 1 causes all moving parts of the gearing to rotate, the disc 10 rotating in the opposite direction to the other members.
