Clutches and speed-varying mechanism.-Relates to hydraulic couplings for transmitting power and speed between two shafts of the kind in which an annular gear wheel 1, Figs. 1 and 2, on the driven shaft 8 and a pinion 2 on the driving shaft 13 are in mesh with intermediate gear wheels 3, and stopping blocks 4 are provided against the annular gear wheel 1 and the intermediate gear wheels 3. According to the invention, means, such as plungers 38, are provided to cause a pressure in a fluid in the inner spaces 27 between the blocks 4, the intermediate wheels 3 and the pinion 2, and this pressure is transmitted to outer spaces 28 between the gear wheels and the blocks, which have ports 15. The speed ratio of the shafts is varied by varying this pressure by adjusting the position of the plungers 38 by means of a sleeve 12, which may be controlled by a centrifugal governor, if it is desired to maintain a given speed automatically. A brake drum a is also provided for the annular gear 1. In a modification, bevel gearing is used instead of spur gearing.
