Abstract
284,926. Boltshauser, H. June 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Variable - s p e e d toothed gearing; clutches, friction.- In variable - speed gearing comprising gear wheels 1 - - 4, 6, Fig. 1, keyed to a driving shaft 5 and meshing with wheels 7 - - 11 loose on bushes 12 fixed on a a driven shaft 15, an idler wheel 11<1> being interposed between the wheels 6, 11 to give a reverse drive and the wheels 7 - - 11 being adapted to be clutched to the shaft 15 by means of hydraulically- or pneumatically-operated diaphragm clutches, the free folds of folded diaphragms 14, which are secured to the wheels 7 - - 11, are attached to friction discs 13 near the outer peripheries thereof, the discs being mounted loosely on both sides of the hubs of the wheels and cooperating with discs 16 secured on the shaft 15, the folds of the diaphragms being s) stiff radially as to obviate the necessity for any guide for the discs 13. Each of the wheels 7 - - 11, together with a disc 13 and a diaphragm 14, forms a pressure chamber 18. Admission of pressure fluid, which may be lubricating oil, to the chambers 18 of the wheels 7 - - 10 is controlled by a ring 19 slidable on a sleeve 20 fixed to the shaft 15, the supply to the chambers 18 of the wheel 11 being controlled independently. An annular chamber 21 in the ring communicates with a supply pipe 22 and, according to the axial displacement of the ring, with one of four holes 29 - - 32 in the sleeve 20, which holes communicate, by means of grooves 23 - - 26 on the shaft, channels 27 in the bushes 12, and ducts 28 in the wheel hubs, with the chambers 18 of the corresponding wheels. Restricted passages 33 in the wheels 7 - - 11 permit leakage of pressure fluid to the teeth, and axial grooves on the bushes 12 permit the leakage of fluid to the faces of the discs 13. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the discs 13 and the wheel hubs have interengaging notches and projections 41, 40 to relieve the discs from strain, and additional diaphragms 42 are secured to the inner peripheries of the discs. In a modification, the discs 13 are connected by the diaphragms to the discs 16 and cooperate with surfaces on the wheels.
