Abstract

587,252. Reversing - gear; friction clutches. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and BALMFORTH, N. Oct. 30, 1944, No. 21088. [Class 80 (ii)] Pressure-oil for engaging and releasing each of two friction clutches in a marine reversing or other gear, is selectively supplied either to a central space 19 (or 19a), between a pair of multi-coned driven plates 15, 15a of each clutch to move them axially apart into driving engagement with a pair of axially fixed complementary outer driving plates 17<2>, or to side spaces 25 (or 25a) between the axially fixed or movable plates for disengagement, oil-supply being effected respectively through passages 20, and 24, 24a, in the movable plates 15, 15a, and annular spaces 21, 26 (and 21a, 26a) in the bearing-housings 22, 22a of the driven shaft 12, whereby the necessity for passages in the shaft itself is avoided. The four annular spaces 21, 21a, 26, 26a communicate through casing passages and pipes 31', 31<3>, &c., Fig. 2, with corresponding outlet ports of a rotary distributing-valve 28 having a pressureinlet 27a at one end and exhaust at the other, together with a spring-loaded detent 33 for defining forward, neutral and reverse positions. Pins 36, Fig. 1, limit the inward disengaging movement of the slidable clutch plates 15, 15a so that one plate cannot restrict disengaging movement of the other. To convey oil to the disengaging space 25 remote from the supplygroove 26, the variable gap between the slidable plates 15, 15a is bridged either by flexible tubing or by a rigid sleeve 39, Fig. 4, with enlarged ends which are a sliding fit in a connecting channel in the plates. The reversing-gear comprises a directly meshing forward pair 13, 17' and a reverse pair 14, 18' connected by an idler, not shown. The axially fixed clutch-plates 17<2>, are screwed into their gear rims 17<1> by threads. of opposite hand which self-tighten under drive torque.
