Abstract

856,417. Irreversible drive mechanisms. HOUPLAIN, R. B. March 26, 1957 [March 27, 1956], No. 9915/57. Class 80 (3). A driven shaft 11, Figs. 1 and 3, is adapted to be clamped by stationary friction discs 24 splined to an outer fixed drum 1, engaging rotatable discs 26 splined to the shaft 11. The discs are pressed against one another by an axially movable plate 31 actuated by cam rivets 33 on a cup member 9 engaging with conical recesses 32 in the plate 31. A driving shaft 6 has dog teeth 8 engaging between spring-loaded cylindrical jamming rollers 19, which are arranged between a cam hub member 16 on driven shaft 11 and the cup member 9. These teeth also engage with lost motion recesses 22 in the member 16 so that upon driving from the shaft 6 the dog teeth release the jamming rollers and the axial pressure on the friction discs and engage the walls of notches 22, of the hub 16 to drive it, and the driven shaft 11. When the driving shaft is stopped the springs of the rollers jam them against the cup member. Attempted rotation from the driven shaft will then cause the plate 31 to be pressed against the friction discs to effect breaking. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 4, balls 59 carried in recesses in a plate 47 on the driving shaft 46 are arranged between a race 50 in a fixed casing 41 and a cam plate 71 rotatable with a driven shaft 51 and acting on fixed and rotatable friction discs 64 and 66. A lost-motion connection between plate 47 and the driven shaft 51 is provided by pins 73 on cam plate 71 engaging in holes 72 in the plate 47. Driving from shaft 46 releases the jamming balls 59 to release the friction discs, to effect drive of the shaft 51. Reverse drive is prevented by the balls 59 jamming to press the friction discs together.
