Variable-speed ratchet gearing of the kind comprising an adjustable lever linkage 3 comprises rack and pinion gearing 5, 13 which drives a shaft 16 on both the forward and the backward stroke of the rack 5. There are two pinions 13 ratchetmounted on separate shafts 14 and meshing with the rack 5 on the same side. The shafts 14 are connected by gears 15.
