Abstract
212,605. Morton, W. J. Nov. 14, 1922. . Variable-speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises a toothed disc 5, Fig. 1, arranged horizontally and adapted to be driven by a pinion 2 movable across it to vary the speed. In changing speed, the pinion 2 with the cardan shaft 1 to which it is splined is raised bodily clear of the disc. This raising, which has the effect of declutching, is effected by a pedal, while the pinion 2 is traversed by a change-speed lever acting through a depending finger 29. The shaft 1 is. mounted in eccentric bearings 11, Fig. 3, connected by gearing 15, 14 and adapted to be operated through gearing 16, 17 by a rod 21 leading to the pedal. A bevel gear 6 or worm under the disc 5 meshes with a wheel on the vehicle driving axle. The pinion 2 has preferably ball teeth 3, Fig. 5, and is supported in a frame 25, Fig. 1, steadied by telescoping rods 27.
