Abstract

1,232,346. Starting I.C. engines. EATON STAMPING CO. 10 March, 1969 [11 March, 1968], No. 12605/69. Heading H2H. A system for starting a small I.C. engine, for instance on a lawn mower, comprises a batterydriven electric motor which drives a gear meshing with teeth on the flywheel of the engine. In the embodiment described, the starter motor 40 is energized by turning a key and so actuating a switch mounted on a casing in which the battery is housed, Figs. 6-8 (not shown). The armature shaft 46 now turns, and the rotation is transmitted to a starter shaft 60 through bevel gears 54 and 80. The inertia of a starter gear 96 now causes it to travel axially along the shaft 60 into the position shown in Fig. 5 because of its engagement with spiral threading 84 on the shaft. The gear is now meshed with the engine flywheel and causes the latter to turn until the engine starts, after which the gear 96 is thrown clear when its speed of rotation exceeds that of the shaft 60.
