Abstract

[Also in Division H2] Engine starting mechanism of the kind wherein a pinion is associated with the shaft of the starter motor and a solenoid is provided for moving the pinion into engagement with a toothed wheel of the engine together with a switch which is closed when the pinion and wheel are in engagement to complete the motor energizing circuit has the solenoid winding connected across a part of the motor circuit in which the current flow is inversely proportional to the motor speed so that if a starting switch is held closed after the engine has started and the motor exceeds a predetermined speed the action of the solenoid is overcome by resilient means such as a spring to withdraw the pinion from engagement with the tooth wheel at the same time opening the switch to break the motor energizing circuit. The switch for energizing the motor circuit may be of the kind operated in two steps, the first of which energizes the motor at low power until the pinion is fully engaged with the toothed wheel, the second step then causing full motor energization. The low power energization may be effected by using only a part of the field windings or by a resistor in series with the field. Alternatively the switch may be arranged to effect full energization of the motor in one step. An auxiliary relay is provided with contacts which open when the pinion is disengaged from the toothed wheel by the resilient means overcoming the solenoid to prevent re-energization of the motor should the starting switch be held closed.
