Abstract

915,955. Starting prime movers. C.A.V. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1961 [Nov. 9, 1960], No. 38441/60. Class 38 (4). Relates to engine-starting apparatus comprising a solenoid 1 for effecting initial engagement of a motordriven pinion with a toothed wheel on the engine, such initial engagement serving to close contacts 3 and energize motor 4 through resistor 5. The rotation of the motor shaft causes the pinion to be moved into full engagement with the wheel, and contacts 6 are then closed to allow full power to be supplied to the motor. When switch 2 is closed to energize solenoid 1, relay windings 8, 11 are also energized but neutralize each other. When contacts 3 are closed, the current through winding 11 is reduced but relay winding 12 is energized so that windings 11, 12, together neutralize winding 8. Closure of contacts 6 short-circuits the winding 11, but the current in the winding 12 is sufficient to neutralize the winding 8 as long as the engine has not started. As soon as the engine starts, the current in winding 12 is reduced, and contacts 9 open to de-energize the solenoid 1. Specification 742,024 is referred to.
