Abstract

1399948 Starting prime movers FMC CORP 8 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 11280/73 Heading H2H Apparatus for starting an internal combustion engine comprises two batteries and a controller remote from the engine by means of which either of the batteries can be selected and used to energize the engine starter motor together with a further controller situated adjacent the engine and which may be used to carry out the starting of the engine. A starting system for an I.C. engine has two batteries A, B, a starter motor 22 and a controller 40 remotely situated from the remainder of the apparatus. Operation of the controller 40 energizes the equipment 28, 30 normally associated with the engine and selectively energizes the coil 32 of contactor 24 or 26 to close the associated contact 34. Thus according to which coil 32 has been energized battery A or B will be connected to the starter motor 22. The system further comprises a controller 50 secured to the engine and which is provided with two switches 52, 54. The switch 54 selects the battery to be used by use of the contact 70 and connects the associated contactor coil 32 to the selected battery by the contact 62. Having selected the battery by the switch 54 operation of the switch 52 to close contacts 64, 66 will energize the equipment 28, 30 over the contact 64 and energize the starter motor 22 over the contact 66. After the engine has started, release of the operating plunger of the switch 52 causes the contact 66 to open to de-energize the starter motor 22 but the contact 64 will stay closed to maintain the energization of the equipment 28, 30. The switches 52, 54 are housed in a sealed unit which is attached to the engine and are intended for use in emergencies only.
