Abstract

1322157 Glow plug ignition ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 9 Sept 1971 [10 Sept 1970] 42056/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division H2] A system for starting a Diesel engine comprises glow plugs 204, a starter motor, a generator, a manually operable switch 1 for supplying current to the glow plugs, a switch 208 for automatically switching on the starter motor after the glow plugs have been energized for a predetermined time and a relay 32 adapted to be connected to the generator for interrupting the current supply to the starter motor when the engine has started. On depressing a push button 101 of the switch 1, a movable contact 113 bridges contacts 114, 115 to connect a battery via a switch 404, which is closed when the gears are idle, a contact 312 of a bi-metal switch 31 and a contact 322 of the relay 32 to an energizing coil 111. The coil co-operates with an armature 110 to hold the switch 1 in its depressed position in which contacts 117, 118 are bridged by a contact 116 to connect the generator to a coil 321 of the relay 32. The battery is therefore connected via leads 400, 405 to the glow plugs 204, a pilot lamp 206 and a heater 209 of the switch 208. After the predetermined time, a bi-metal contact 210 of the switch 208, which is in thermal contact with the engine coolant 211, closes to connect the battery via leads 406, 401 to the starter motor circuit. Also a heater 311 of the switch 31 is energized and opens the contact 312 to release the push button switch 1 if the engine has not started within a pre-set time. Assuming the engine to have started within the pre-set time, the generator energizes the coil 321 to open the contact 322 thereby releasing the switch 1. The push button switch may be depressed beyond its first position to cause a contact 103 to bridge contacts 104, 105 thus connecting the battery directly to the starter motor circuit to enable a rapid re-start of a cold engine.
