Abstract
1293364 Systems for starting prime movers AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT and REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT 29 Oct 1969 [5 Nov 1968 8 Oct 1969] 52927/69 Heading H2H A system for starting a diesel engine includes an engine heating circuit which is energized by a manual switch. At the same time, a thermal delay device is actuated, and this closes a switch to the starter supply circuit after a time dependent on the ambient temperature. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, each cylinder of the engine is heated by a heater plug 10, and the delay device consists of a resistor 7 which heats a bimetal contact 11. To start the engine, an anti-theft switch 1 is first closed, resulting in the closure of a contact 3 in series with a starting switch 4. Contacts 5 of this switch are now closed, and current is supplied to the resistor 7 and heaters 10. After a delay, the contact 11 closes, energizing a coil 13 which simultaneously makes a contact 15 to supply the starter 16, and moves a switch 9 over to a contact 14 which removes current from the resistor 7 and enables the heaters 10 to be supplied direct from the battery B. The removal of the resistor 7 from its previous connection in series with the heaters 10 compensates the latter for the voltage drop due to the connection of the starter 16. As the bimetal 11 cools, its contact will open, and if the engine has not started, the switch 5 is held closed and a further heating cycle takes place. If the engine is already warm, a contact 6 of the switch 4 can be closed, thus energising the starter immediately indicator lamps 18, 19 may be included in the circuit. Further embodiments are described with reference to Figs. 2-6 (not shown). The bimetal 11 may be shunted or replaced by a thermocontact responsive to engine temperature, or by a thermistor. The system may also include a switch operable to open and close a fuel conduit during starting and stopping of the engine respectively.
