Abstract

The system inhibits the crank signal to the engine 1 until the glow-plug warming procedure is complete, when a warning light 5 is extinguished and cranking can occur. The start inhibitor device 3 may be inserted in a conventional system or may be integrated with the glow-plug timer control unit 2 (fig.2). The engine is started in optimum condition with reduced battery drain and exhaust emissions.

Description

DIESEL START INHIBITOR SYSTEM This invention relates to a Diesel Start Inhibitor System.
Diesel engined products are well known in today's society. The application of a diesel engine is widespread, including automobiles, commercial vehicles, marine, heavy plant equipment, leisure products etc., etc.
In order to start a diesel engine efficiently, it is necessary to first wait while a system called 'Glow Plug Warming' takes place. The functionality of this system is fed back to the user normally by a warning light.
The process of 'Glow Plug Warming' is effected by temperature i.e. the colder the environment, the longer the time to heat up the glow plugs. When starting a diesel engine, the user should after applying power (usually through an ignition crank circuit) wait until the glow plug warning light has extinguished before attempting to start. If this procedure is followed then the diesel engine will start swiftly and with little emissions. However, if this procedure is not followed and the engine is started whilst the warning light is still on, then the engine will be difficult to start and when it finally starts black smoke emissions will be evident. The extra cranking involved to start the engine in this condition effects the battery performance and also the resulting Black Smoke' increased emissions are not environmentally friendly.
According to the present invention there is provided means to inhibit the start of a diesel engine until the correct glow plug warming procedure has taken place in full. The invention is achieved by means of an electronic, electrical or electromechanical device inserted into or designed into the conventional elements of a diesel engine starting system. The device is activated when the user attempts to start (crank) the engine.
When crank is detected the device inhibits the crank signal to the engine until the 'Glow Plug Warming' procedure is fully complete. Completion of the procedure is normally indicated by a warning light extinguishing at which point the crank signal to the engine will be activated by the device. Thus the engine will always start at its optimum condition.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 shows: Diesel engine with starter motor system and glow plug timer unit controlled by diesel start inhibitor device inserted into the system.
Fig 2 shows: Diesel engine with starter motor system and glow plugs controlled by integrated glow plug timer with start inhibit system Referring to the drawing(s) the system comprises a diesel engine (1) with it's glow plugs and starter motor controlled by either a diesel glow plug timer (2) and a diesel start inhibitor device (3) or a combined glow plug timer with integrated start inhibit system fig. 2(4) controlling a warning light (5) and the whole system activated by a starter switch (6).

Claims (1)

1. An electronic, electrical or electromagnetic device inserted into or designed into the conventional elements of a diesel engine starting system. The device inhibits the start of a diesel engine until the full glow plug warming procedure has taken place. The device is activated when the user attempts to start (crank) the engine. When crank is detected the device inhibits the crank signal to the engine until the glow plug warming procedure is complete. Completion of the procedure is normally indicated by a warning light extinguishing at which point the crank signal to the engine will be activated by the device. This new control procedure ensures the engine starts at its optimum condition reducing battery drain and emissions.
