Abstract

1,176,155. Starting prime movers. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. 3 Nov., 1967 [5 Nov., 1966], No. 50125/67. Heading H2H. [Also in Division F1] A starting arrangement or a diesel engine comprises a manually operated, spring returnable rotary switch having a plurality of operating positions, movement of the arm of the switch from the engine pre-heat position to the engine starting position being inhibited by a stop until a predetermined pre-heat time has elapsed. A rotary switch 12 has a manually operable arm 10 movable between positions O, I, II, III and returnable to the "OFF" position shown by a spring 14. Movement of the arm 10 to position I supplies various ancillary loads as indicated by a lamp 24. Further movement of the arm 10 to position II, the pre-heat position, supplies a number of pre-heaters 36, the arm 10 being held in position II by a stop device 42 which device prevents movement of the arm to position III, the starting position. Simultaneously with the heating of the pre-heaters 36, the heater of a bimetal switch 40 is heated, the switch 40 being situated in the coolant of the engine. When the engine reaches its operating temperature contacts 44 of switch 40 close to energize a relay 46 thereby closing its contacts 56. Closure of these latter contacts energizes the coil 62 of the stop device 42 whereupon the armature 64 is retracted, releasing the arm 10 which is returned by the spring 14 to the OFF position. The engine operator now has a limited period within which to move the arm 10 through position II into position III thereby closing contacts 68 since contacts 44 have remained closed and relay 46 and stop device 42 are energized as soon as the arm 10 reaches the switch select 26. Closure of contacts 68 then energizes locking device 84 and electromagnetic device 80 so that a rod 82 moves into position to supply fuel to the engine with simultaneous energization of relay 74 whereupon motor 76 is energized to start the engine. The arm 10 is moved into position O to stop the engine, in which position electromagnetic device 90 is energized to move the rod 82 to its fuel cut-off position.
