Abstract

1432456 Choke control unit CHRYSLER CORP 30 Aug 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 40921/73 Heading F1B A choke control unit for an I.C. engine with a carburetter 12 having a choke valve 18 in its air intake passage 20 responsive to a thermally responsive actuating member 24, comprises a first temperature responsive electric switch 50 which closes when its temperature attains a predetermined value, a temperature responsive time delay electric switch 52 in series with the first and arranged to open when its temperature exceeds a second higher predetermined value and a heating element 26 in series with the first switch 50 and the time delay switch 52 and adapted to be positioned in thermal relationship to the thermally responsive actuating member 24 to supply heat thereto for a predetermined time controlled by the second switch 52 when the first switch 50 is closed. The switch 52 includes a heater winding 54 which when energized through switch 50 causes switch 52 to open after about four minutes; but when energized via a resistor 64 (i.e. when switch 50 is open, at low ambient temperature) takes longer to cause switch 52 to open. The lower current passing through element 26 when switch 50 is open ensures that the choke value 18 takes longer to open. Switch 50 is chosen to close at 68‹F and open at 48‹F. A further switch 72, which is engine operation responsive, e.g. inlet vacuum responsive) may be included to prevent energization of the heating element 26 until the engine is in operation. The resistor 64 may be omitted so that, when the switch 50 is open, the actuating member 24 is heated only by engine heat.
